THE RECOLLECTION: REDUX

San Francisco (Karl)

This limited edition 13”X18” reduction letterpress print was created at Kavamore Press in Berkeley, California in May of 2023 on a 1959 Vandercook Universal One Proof Press. I was invited out to an artist residency in the Bay Area and saw this fog every morning.

This print was created using the reduction method of removing surface area every time a new color was added and sent through the press. This reduction print was printed and carved six times to achieve the depth and color of the classic San Francisco fog, named Karl, looking through one bridge to see another off in the distance.

The frame was beautifully crafted using reclaimed wood from old church pews from St. Paul, Minnesota by fellow printmaker Stanley Leonard. This print is framed to perfection with a gorgeous inlay and matte.

Raven

This 13“ X 18” reduction block print is hand carved from a single linoleum block a total of 8 times. It is monochromatic but then I decided to add some gold leaf to the image. I think that it takes it to a whole new level. This is an edition of 35 prints and I love this one so much.

The frames were made from old church pews from St. Paul, Minnesota by fellow printmaker Stanley Leonard, they are gorgeous with inlay and framed perfectly.

Blue Jay

This 13“ X 18” reduction block print is hand carved from a single linoleum block a total of eight times. I transfer the initial image, which is a beautiful photograph done be local photographer Ryan James Unger from the winter of 2020 in Quarry Park. I carved and printed this block eight times to capture the delicate loveliness of a beautiful sassy bird.

Mr. Wiggles

This 13“ X 18” reduction block print is hand carved from a single linoleum block a total of eight times. I transfer the initial image, which is a beautiful photograph done by local photographer Steve Diamond of his favorite lizard, Mr. Wiggles. I carved and printed this block eight times to capture the intricacy of Mr. Wiggles scale pattern. I then added gold leaf to the sun and the whole thing feels pretty incredible!

THE HOUSE COLLABORATION

These prints were initially part of a collaboration with owners of The House Food & Tap: Craig & Brianne Hern. We worked closely to develop imagery and language that celebrates small-town warmth, shared values, and the simple joy of coming together over good food and drink. The piece features over 30 individual prints, all hand-carved from linoleum blocks and printed using antique presses, layered with hand-set wood and metal type. The result is a vibrant visual patchwork of words, symbols, and textures that speak to love, teamwork, and belonging
